OUTSIDE IN: REDUX
JUN. 16, 2022 - AUG. 6, 2022
In celebration of Juneteenth 2022, Elder Gallery of Contemporary Art presents Outside In: Redux featuring the works of Zipporah Joel, Vek Neal, Chilly-O, Michi Meko, William Downs, Codi Maddox as well as Elder’s own Carla Aaron-Lopez, Makayla Binter and J. Stacy Utley. Speaking to an all too common experience of feeling like outsiders to the art world, Outside In: Redux reflects the various nuances of existing and creating as a Contemporary artist of color. At Elder, all are welcome to experience that art is for everyone, and as we honor Juneteenth, we are reminded of the power of unity, and our mission to amplify all voices in our local and global community.
Juneteenth, first recognized as a national holiday last year, celebrates June 19, 1865, the date when federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, to free the remaining enslaved people in the United States. Though it has long been celebrated among the African American community, it is a history that has been marginalized and still remains largely unknown to the wider public. The legacy of Juneteenth shows the value of deep hope and urgent organizing in uncertain times. It is a day to recognize resilience and joy.
