EVOLUTION: SUSAN BRENNER & CHASE LANGFORD
SEP. 7, 2018 - OCT. 27, 2018
Explore rich textures, abstract forms and the evolution of movement in the paintings of Susan Brenner and Chase Langford. These artists are constantly exploring and experimenting, but sometimes revisit earlier phases, or even come full circle, yet with new understandings of their foundations. Both facile with rendering and expressing an aliveness in their art, Brenner and Langford find ways to explore the mysteries of the world while fearlessly plunging into unknown territory and experimenting with ways in which to compose and express individuality. Both artists pull inspiration from the outer world, Brenner as she meticulously manipulates her own metaphorical tableaus, keeping them in a state of flux and Langford as he reinvents and abstracts forms he finds in different landscapes and geological strata. There is no final phase for Brenner or Langford – even in their mastery there is no endpoint to their evolution.
Opening reception with the artists on Friday, September 7, 2018 from 5p – 8p.
Coffee and presentation with Chase Langford on Saturday, September 8 from 11:30a – 12:30p.

Susan Brenner is a Charlotte-based artist who uses a variety of media to make statements about our world today, as well as the human condition. She combines photography and painting to create series of work dealing with concepts such as fluidity, migration, movement and societal change. Recently retired as a Professor of Art at UNC-Charlotte, Susan remains an active creative force in the local and national art scene. She recently completed public art for the Charlotte, NC light rail extension. These multi-colored glass panel walls, inspired by the branches of Charlotte’s tree canopy, cast shifting colored shadows in the elevator/stairway towers at two stations. Brenner has exhibited at the LACE Annuale Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions, the Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art, the Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art, the Columbia Museum of Art, the North Carolina Museum of Art, and the Mint Museum of Art.
Los Angeles-based Chase Langford has a universal love of nature and a lifelong fascination with natural forms that he indulges with travel around the United States and the world. Inspired by his journeys, as well as his many years as a cartographer, Langford picks out geographic forms he finds in the landscape to create patterns on canvas. His use of layering and rich color makes for intricate work deeply rooted in graphic stylization. Langford’s belief that painting is a journey, rather than a destination, translates into dynamic work that is uniquely his own. His work is displayed in residential, public and corporate collections worldwide, including the Long Beach Museum of Art, the Four Seasons in Hong Kong, USC’s Keck School of Medicine, Monique Lhuillier Inc, UBS and Nordstrom stores nationwide, and his work is collected by celebrities such as Magic Johnson and Pete Sampras.
